about

Papa Records are proud and excited to welcome Os Malandros to the label with their primed for summertime, Brazilian infused single ‘Para Na Wey’.

OS Malandros (Brazilian Portuguese slang for 'The Hustlers') is a collaboration of two Djs who met at a Brazilian party in Manchester, three years ago. Irfan Hussain of Rainy City Music fame and Prashanth Pallemoni both share a love of House and Brazilian Music. Their passion for all things samba was further developed at Irfan's long running Brazilian party in Manchester (also based in London too) called Balanco, now running for seven years. Their debut release on Papa 'Para Na Wey' (a chant sung by Capoeira performers) stems from living with and around Brazilian culture for some time now.

The ‘Rainy City Music Mix’ is instantly infectious, picking you up and carrying you along for the samba ride, igniting dancefloors across the world from Rio to London! The catchy berimbau will have you hooked in in no time and the rhythmic chant will have your nearest disco in raptures. The Realm aka Toni Economides (KV5) and Oli Lazarus (Reel People / Papa Records), add a stripped down ‘Dub Mix’, which we think will work as a very cool dj tool.

The uniqueness of this project comes from the fact that you have two guys, one in Manchester and one in Hyderabad, India collaborating on new Brazilian based dance music. Prashanth is an amazing turntablist who cuts and scratches to Tabla phonetics and has won awards for his skills in India. Irfan the man behind highly respected Manchester label Rainy City Music, is not only one of the most respected House music DJs in the world but also a man with a vast knowledge of the Samba genre aswell. Having Djed all over the world alongside New York’s finest House dj’s including the likes of Joe Claussell, Dj Spinna and Jerome Syndenham he has also opened for Brazilian greats including Azymuth, Joyce, Seu Jorge and Drumajik too. In fact he is the only non-American Dj to play @ Alma in New York, which ironically is a party based on Brazilian and House Music (Neo Brazilian Fusion), previous guests have included Louie Vega and Osunlade amongst so many others.
The only other collaboration between the two djs before ‘Para Na Wey’ was their very popular ‘Our Raag’, which is a combination of House, classical Indian music and Jazz and came out on Still Music in Chicago. The common thread influencing Os Malandros is the idea of mixing cultures musically. "When we met, Prashanth was taken aback by my awareness of House Music, following it from the mid eighties but couldn't get his head around the fact I was playing brand new Brazilian Music to a fully Brazilian crowd in the UK" Irfan recalls. To play the great Jorge Ben and Gilberto Gil alongside new dance music has always been an underground sentiment which Os Malandros intend to take to a wider audience in the very near future.
